Drugs Can Lead to DUI too

Police in the Delaware town of Harrington say they arrested a drunk driver who ate marijuana during a traffic stop.

According to reports, a Harrington police officer stopped Vernon Smith, 40, on West Center Street late Friday.

According to police spokesperson, Lt. Earl Brode, the officer who stopped Smith noted the strong scent of alcohol coming from the suspect’s vehicle and noted that there was a plastic bag of marijuana on the console.

The officer returned to his police cruiser to do a computer check on Smith’s driver’s license. By the time the officer returned to Smith’s vehicle, the plastic bag was gone and Smith was eating the marijuana. Brode also said that Smith had admitted that he eaten the marijuana.

Smith was arrested then later released on $1,850 secured bond.
